The story, fanciful and captivating as it is, is less impressive than the gorgeous visuals. But its emphasis on promoting humanity in dark times and the transcendent value of imagination and artistry is uplifting. It's little wonder that members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose this barely seen gem for one of its Oscar nominees for 2009's best animated feature.
